The Jamaica Youth Theatre was formed in 2004 as the performing arm of the Schools’ Drama Festival of Jamaica.
Thirty talented young people ages 13 to 20 recruited from several secondary schools all over Jamaica, each with a burning passion for theatre – this is the future of Jamaican theatre, this is Jamaica Youth Theatre. JYT specializes in bringing classic West Indian plays to the Jamaican stage in a professional and entertaining way.
The Jamaica Youth Theatre has consistently wowed audiences and critics alike across Jamaica and the wider Caribbean with its excellent performances over the years. The group has walked away with the top production awards at the Caribbean Secondary Schools Drama Festivals held in Trinidad and Tobago (2004) and St. Lucia (2007).
In 2007, the Jamaica Youth Theatre received the Prime Minister’s Youth Award for excellence in Arts and Culture. For the production of MAN BETTER MAN in 2007, JYT won the Actor Boy Award from BEST DRAMA.
